Regulatory Scrutiny: NYC Local Law 144 as a Bellwether
Perhaps the most significant development shaking up the HR tech landscape is the emergence of specific legislation targeting AI in employment. New York City’s Local Law 144, effective July 5, 2023, is a prime example, serving as a bellwether for what may become a nationwide or even global trend. This law mandates that any employer or employment agency using an “automated employment decision tool” (AEDT) to screen candidates or employees for employment decisions must:
