The Ownership Ledger
Once a year, right after I close out the prior year’s books, I sit down and ask three questions about every process and system my company runs on. What do I already own? What am I still renting that I ought to own instead? And what am I quietly borrowing from one person’s head that needs to get written down before it walks out the door?
That exercise is the ownership ledger. Chapter 10 walks through how mine started – a jewelry consulting firm handed me a division I didn’t know I was building, one client relationship at a time, until an owner decided the honest move was to let it walk out with me instead of holding on past the point it made sense. This is the worksheet version. The page I actually fill in every January.
Fill it in honestly. My first ledger was almost all borrowed and rented rows with nearly nothing marked owned. That’s not a failure. That’s what year one looks like for almost anybody who runs this straight. The only goal is fewer borrowed rows on next January’s page than you have on this one.
