- New York City Local Law 144 (LL144): In effect since July 2023, LL144 is a groundbreaking law that requires employers using Automated Employment Decision Tools (AEDTs) to conduct independent bias audits annually. It also mandates that employers provide notice to candidates about the use of AEDTs, the job qualifications and characteristics the tool will use, and allows candidates to request alternative selection processes or accommodations. Failure to comply can result in significant civil penalties.

It categorizes AI systems by risk level, with many HR applications (like those used for recruitment, screening, or promotion) falling into the “high-risk” category.
